Community partners foster engaged classrooms

Fifteen students from the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) visited the Ingleside on the Bay Coastal Watch Association (IOBCWA), hosted by President Patrick Nye and his wife, Julie. Known for their hospitality and generosity, the Nye family has welcomed many UTA students over the years, sharing valuable insights into current developments. With Patrick Nye’s extensive expertise in coastal environments, this visit—one of many—provided students with a unique opportunity to engage with real-world environmental challenges.

Formed in 2019, IOBCWA tackles pressing issues such as sea level rise, land erosion, and increased ship traffic. As a grassroots organization, it is committed to research, education, community partnerships, and action to address these challenges.

During the visit, UTA students, who are focused on urban design strategies to help communities and cities in the region adapt to changing environmental conditions, gained valuable knowledge about IOBCWA’s efforts. They were inspired by the organization’s work to balance environmental preservation with industrial demands, and the role of community-driven action in fostering resilience.

UTA’s Smart Coast Initiative extends its gratitude to Patrick and Julie Nye, along with IOBCWA, for their continued collaboration and warm hospitality
