Coastalstudio: Cocreating resilient urban futures along the coast and its hinterlands

Coastalstudio is a platform for engaged courses in architecture and urbanism focusing on resilient urban futures along the coast and its hinterlands. Under the leadership of Dr. Oswald Jenewein, Director of FUELED – the Future Environments Lab for Ecological Design and Co-Chair of the Smart Coast Initiative, Coastalstudio provides students with hands-on experiences while engaging places and people along the shore.

Since 2018, Dr. Jenewein has guided students through practical projects in the Corpus Christi Bay region. Coastalstudio focuses on developing climate-resilient urban landscapes with a participatory approach central to the educational philosophy.

Dr. Jenewein commented, “By integrating students into research projects, we provide valuable experiences that connect theoretical knowledge with practical application. This integration is crucial for preparing them to address real-world environmental challenges effectively.”

This model not only enriches the learning experience but also equips students with the skills and insights needed to create innovative solutions for pressing ecological issues. Coastalstudio’s commitment to research-informed teaching ensures that students are well-prepared to contribute to sustainable and resilient urban futures.
