Arlington, TX – September 14, 2022 – The University of Texas at Arlington is proud to announce the launch of a major National Science Foundation (NSF) project aimed at addressing environmental challenges in Texas’ Coastal Bend Region. The $2.5 million initiative follows an initial $150,000 planning grant from NSF and was unveiled today at the Civil Engineering Building.
Led by Dr. Michelle Hummel, Dr. Oswald Jenewein, Dr. Karabi Bezboruah, and Dr. Yonghe Liu, the project addresses the significant environmental stressors of air and water pollution. The region currently suffers from inadequate monitoring and communication systems, leaving communities without crucial data and decision-making tools.
“Our project will integrate smart technologies into regional communication networks to enhance the ability to manage and adapt to these challenges,” said Dr. Hummel. The initiative will work closely with local residents, community organizations, and officials to improve public engagement and build adaptive capacity. Dr. Oswald Jenewein added, “This project is a significant step toward creating a robust model for regional resilience, and it underscores our commitment to fostering collaboration and engagement with the local community.”
